J.J. Abrams' Constantine TV series has been scrapped by HBO Max following the news that a Constantine sequel movie is now in the works, with Keanu Reeves set to return.
Abrams' Bad Robot Productions weas developing the series alongside Madame X, another series based on a DC Comics property. However, while Warner Bros. TV and Bad Robot will look to shop the shows to other platforms to keep them alive, they have been cancelled by HBO Max, as reported by The Wrap.
While little was known of the Constantine TV series, it would have revolved around the popular DC character and was planned to tie in with the Justice League Dark universe. British writer Guy Bolton was developing the series.
In the comics, John Constantine is a cynical occult detective who can communicate with half-angels and half-demons and knows of the realms of Heaven and Hell. The character has been depicted a number of times on screen, most notably by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 movie Constantine, which also starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, and Tilda Swinton.

Matt Ryan then played the character in the NBC series of the same name, although that only ran for a single season. Ryan later reprised the role in Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow as well as several animated projects. Most recently, Jenna Coleman played a female version of Constantine in Netflix's series The Sandman, which is based on Neil Gaiman's comic series.

Now, Reeves will return to the role in a new sequel that will take place in the DCEU. Again, little is known of the movie's plot details, and any further casting is yet to be announced. Akiva Goldsman will write the screenplay, however, and J.J. Abrams will produce via Bad Robot Productions, as reported by Deadline.
