Browncoats, don't lose hope of a Firefly reboot just yet.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Fox Broadcasting President of Entertainment David Madden has said that Fox would be open to a reboot of the cruelly cancelled cult sci-fi series.

But it'd only happen if creator Joss Whedon was involved and wanted to do it, and Madden fears that he's now too busy with movies these days.

Fox has had plenty of experience with reboots recently, with the comebacks of The X-Files and 24.

And Whedon has previously said that he had a wealth of stories featuring the Serenity crew ready before Fox robbed us of them. "I designed this world and these characters in this ensemble to sustain seven years' worth [of stories]," explained Whedon.

Future plots drafted for Firefly included the reveal that Inara (Morena Baccarin) had a terminal illness, and a baby for Zoe (Gina Torres) and Wash (Alan Tudyk).

Oh, and Wash would NOT have met the grisly fate he did in film spin-off Serenity. #JusticeForWash anyone?

However, it seems Whedon would have a job on his hands to persuade Nathan Fillion, who played space pirate Mal Reynolds, that a comeback was worth it.

"I loved every minute of it. [So] it's really hard to look at that kind of stuff and say, 'Give me more', because enough is enough," he previously said. "Oh my God, it was everything. It was everything. How can everything not be enough?"

For now, we'll have to make do with animator Stephen Byrne's stunning fan-made The Animated Adventures of Firefly.
