The US remake of ITV dramedy Doc Martin has just added a Grey's Anatomy star to its cast.

Abigail Spencer, known to Grey's fans for the role of Dr Megan Hunt, is now officially part of Best Medicine, which is set to adapt the beloved British medical drama (via Variety).

Announced in May, Best Medicine will take action across the pond, with The Handmaid's Tale star Josh Charles playing protagonist Dr Martin Best.

Spencer won't be wearing scrubs this time around as she's set to portray schoolteacher Louisa Glasson, who initially butts heads with Martin.

Named Dr Martin Ellingham in the UK version, the lead role was played by Martin Clunes across ten series aired on ITV between 2004 and 2022. Louisa was played by Caroline Catz, with her character appearing in all ten seasons.

Also starring Lucy Punch and Stephanie Cole in earlier seasons, Doc Martin follows a blunt London surgeon-turned-GP who relocates to the Cornish cost after developing haemophobia.

The series earned a loyal following over the years, with viewers on IMDb waxing lyrical about the show in their audience reviews.

"Doc Martin is as close as it gets to perfection," one person noted, while another fan said the show stands out in a sea of cosy medical dramas thanks to its irksome main character.

"This gem of a series is lifted out of the sickly-sweet genre of medic/policeman in small quirky country community[...] by the spectacular social ineptness of the lead character, Doc Martin, perfectly played by Martin Clunes," they wrote.

The American remake is said to explore a similar storyline, with Dr Best leaving Boston behind to take post in the quaint fishing village where he spent his holidays as a kid.

"Unfortunately, Martin's blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, especially local schoolteacher Louisa Glasson," the logline for the US series reads.

"However, tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered."

Doc Martin is available to stream on ITVX.
