Former Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl has admitted she felt "embarrassed" by the show's infamous ghost sex scene.

The actor played Dr Izzie Stevens on ABC's medical drama, appearing in the first six seasons of the show before departing in 2010.

Involved in numerous storylines across the years, one of the more notable scenes was from season five episode 'In the Midnight Hour', in which Izzie has sex with the ghost of the late Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heigl and Morgan reunited two decades on to discuss their time on the show, with the pair in agreement that the fifth season contained some "confusing" moments.

"It was confusing for everyone," recalled Heigl. "There's one particular scene that I will not watch with my children... I don't care if they're 60, I'm not watching this with them. It was a scene where you're in the room, but I'm trying to be like, 'You are not here, you're not here.'

"And Alex [Justin Chapman] and Izzie start messing around and he goes down on her. And you're just standing there. And I was just sort of at the time like, 'This is what the money's for, right?' I'm like, 'I don't know what to do… I'll give it my best.'"

Heigl further said that she would struggle to explain a scene in which Izzie and 'ghost Denny' have sex, saying: "I'm like, 'You can watch it, but I don't want to sit next to you. I will be so embarrassed.' I don't know how to explain this."

Heigl isn't the only Grey's Anatomy star to share their apprehension at the prospect of their children watching the show, with Ellen Pompeo - who plays Dr Meredith Grey - recently explaining that her youngest child "isn't ready" to view it.

"My 10-year-old wants to see it, [but] she's not ready," said Pompeo. "I don't want my daughter to see me in my underwear on television just yet. But all her classmates have. So, that makes for great conversation at pick-up."

Grey's Anatomy season 21 airs on Thursdays at 10pm ET on ABC in the US. Previous seasons are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
