Having such a loyal fandom, Shadow and Bone had to meet very high expectations when Netflix aired its adaptation.

Thankfully, it did that and more.

Now, Netflix has revealed that season 2 will premiere on March 16, 2023… and has even treated fans to some stills from the upcoming season.

To summarise the photos in three words, it looks like we can expect plenty of fighting, plotting and romance from season 2. Exactly what we’ve come to expect from the Grishaverse.

The first image shared shows Alina Starkov (played by Jessie Mei Li) using her developing Sun Summoning powers, accompanied by Malyen Oretsev (Archie Renaux). Further photos include the Crows, Nikolai Lantsov (Patrick Gibson), and General Kirigan/The Darkling (Ben Barnes).

Of course, the first season of the show ended on a cliffhanger, with Kirigan entering into The Fold through fairly distasteful means, and with equally questionable motives.

A Volcra vs The Darkling fight then ensued, with Kirigan seeming to be overcome... only to reappear later even more powerful than before, with the Volcra under his control.

Next season, an all-powerful Kirigan is to be expected (and feared), but there is plenty more to be on the lookout for.

A teaser trailer released in September shows that Alina is driven to face The Darkling head on, as a "symbol" of the Grisha. And, the cast have given their own three words to describe the next release, hinting that heartbreak, love and trauma are all to come.

Meanwhile, casting news suggests that plenty of new characters are prepared to dive in and join the action (or, of course, to die in The Fold).

Although author Leigh Bardugo was initially terrified to hand over her series to Netflix, no one can deny it has been a hit, scoring great reviews from viewers and critics alike. It sounds like season 2 will live up to its predecessor, delivering the drama, action and intensity the show has become known for.

Shadow and Bone is streaming on Netflix. Season 2 will come to Netflix on March 16.
