Supergirl star responds to Lex Luthor's fate in series finale

Supergirl aired its final ever episode last night (November 9), bringing to an end six years of the Arrowverse's first female-led series.

In the finale, classic Superman villain Lex Luthor tried to trap our heroes within the Phantom Zone, a sort of inter-dimensional prison that's really hard to escape from. Unfortunately for him, his plan backfired and he became the one who was trapped, with the Phantoms preying upon his deep-seated fear.

Speaking to TVLine, actor Jon Cryer (jokingly) claimed that he wasn't a fan of the ending, because he wanted his character to be victorious, although he understands why the showrunner would want to end a superhero show with the superhero winning.

"Well, I didn't like it at first because I want Lex to win. It's the end of the show. Supergirl isn't going to be around anymore. How about Lex just wins? Just give him a bone!" he said.

"But I thought it functions well in a lot of ways because it's genuinely awful, and he's a genuinely awful person. But also, [his love interest Nxyly is] in there with him so he can pursue her and be turned down by her for thousands and thousands of years. Wonderful and awful at the same time...

"That he would end up shooting himself in the foot in such spectacular fashion is very satisfying because he is the epitome of self-involvement. He's narcissistic and self-involved and entitled – that is him as an icon. The whole journey of the show has been leading up to that."

Although Supergirl has ended, spin-off Superman & Lois has not. Obviously Lex is Superman's arch-enemy, so you'd expect he might eventually break free from the Phantom Zone and return in the newer show.

Although it's not a confirmation, Cryer says that he is definitely up for a return and believes that it's totally possible for Lex to eventually escape from his prison, stating: "He'd be even more motivated by revenge and even more tapped into an even worse group of friends. If anything, the Phantom Zone would make him more dangerous."

Meanwhile, Supergirl actress herself Melisssa Benoist said she would "not be opposed" to reprising her role.

Supergirl aired on Tuesdays at 9/8c on The CW in the US. Sky Max and NOW air the show in the UK.
