Supergirl series finale will bring back original cast member

Supergirl is set to pull out all the stops for its series finale, with another original cast member set to return to the fold.

Following the recent confirmation by David Harewood (J'onn J'onzz) that Chris Wood and Jeremy Jordan would be coming back as Mon-El and Winn, respectively, Supergirl herself has announced another key player is returning.

Yep, Mehcad Brooks is back as James Olsen – also known as the original Guardian – having last been seen in season 5.

"It would not have felt right if they hadn't come back," Melissa Benoist told Entertainment Weekly. "I loved seeing my friends. [Laughs] I loved seeing Mehcad Brooks. I loved seeing Jeremy. I loved having Chris back, obviously.

"I don't think it would've been a right goodbye if the people who came back hadn't come back, so I'm very grateful that they did.

"It's always difficult to get that many people back in the same place, especially in the pandemic, so I'm really glad it worked out that way."

The news comes after Benoist revealed earlier this month that filming had wrapped on the sixth and final season, sharing an image with her co-stars.

"Thank you for an incredible 6 years – the cast who became family, everyone who worked on the show, all of you who watched us week after week [three heart emojis] that's a wrap on @supergirlcw," the star wrote.

The actress previously promised a "great ending" for her character in the CW series, recalling: "They pitched it to me because they wanted to know if I had any input as to where I wanted to see Kara ending up at the end of the series.

"I had one request, and it wasn't even something they were thinking about doing. And they pitched me the end, and it's really lovely. It's a great ending. I feel fantastic about it."

Supergirl airs on Sundays at 9/8c on The CW in the US. Sky One and NOW air the show in the UK.
