The Umbrella Academy star Robert Sheehan has revealed he "beat himself up" while filming season two as he felt he hadn't made his character "different enough".

The actor returns as Klaus Hargreeves in the new batch of episodes from Netflix, though while chatting to Digital Spy, he admitted he felt a bit self-conscious about his performance.

"I was worried, because Klaus spends a lot of time in the past," Robert explained. "Arguably, the most stuff happens to him. He's there the longest before the show picks up in '63.

"I wanted the audience, when they first see him, to be like, 'Wait, is this the same person?' But to obviously have the kind of Klaus elements.

"I beat myself up a little bit because the first two or three months, I was like, 'No, I haven't made him different enough. I haven't made him different enough. I've sort of fallen back into the kind of riding-a-bike style intuition of playing him. Have I evolved him enough?'"

However, Sheehan went on to reveal that while doing ADR (additional dialogue recording), he saw some snippets of the first few episodes, recalling: "And I went, 'Oh, no'. Actually, I was quite pleased.

"So I felt quite happy. But that was my challenge. It was all going on inside my own head, you know? As it often is."

Ahead of its debut later this week, The Umbrella Academy season two has landed a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Umbrella Academy season 2 arrives on Friday, July 31 on Netflix.
