Dancing on Ice's Vanessa Bauer has explained why she's had to step down from the current season.

The professional skater was paired with Love Island's Chris Taylor, but last night he took to the rink with Robin Johnstone to perform the 'Pokémon Theme'.

In a video post on Instagram, Vanessa shared the "upsetting news" that it was a nasty injury that forced her to pull out of the competition.

"I'm here today with rather upsetting news. I am unfortunately not going to be able to continue skating on Dancing on Ice with Chris," she said.

"That is really upsetting for me. I have trained Chris since October last year, and it always such an amazing achievement for myself to see someone else progress so much in a skill that they've never done before.

"So it's been really rewarding for me to watch this whole journey for Chris, the way that he's got better each week."

"But yeah, my health comes first, and I unfortunately had a little accident backstage last week on Dancing on Ice just before the live show on Sunday.

"And I didn't realise how bad it was then, but we did an MRI and it turned out that I have a completely torn ligament, grade 3 sprain injury and a major grade 2 sprain injury.

"I shouldn't be skating on an injury like that, and so I'm taking all the advice from the medical professionals here. I am in very good hands in order to do rehab and do everything that I can to get it better."

Vanessa explained that she has a high pain threshold, so she had been skating all week without realising how bad it was.

Chris shared her post to his Instagram Stories, and paid tribute to his former partner, writing: "She is hands down the most committed, determined and inspirational person I've ever met.

"She gives everything 3,000% and it's been an honour to be taught by her. Very, very sad we didn't get to finish this together, but you've got an annoying brother for life now."

Following last night's show, Chris said it has been "a tough 24 hours" but he and Robin thanked fans for voting to keep them in the competition.

Dancing on Ice airs Sunday nights on ITV1 and ITVX.
