Channel 5 is going to premiere a brand new movie adaptation of Agatha Christie's Crooked House, and it boasts a seriously impressive all-star cast and crew.

The channel is expected to air Crooked House – adapted from Christie's murder-mystery set in the '50s – next month (December). In an unusual move, the film's cinema release will then take place after the Channel 5 broadcast.

The story takes place in the aftermath of the death of wealthy Greek patriarch Aristide Leonides, who (surprise, surprise) dies in mysterious and suspicious circumstances.

After discovering his demise, Leonides's granddaughter Sophia de Haviland implores her former lover, private detective Charles Hayward, to investigate.

Sounds wonderfully salacious.

Max Irons will play Charles Hayward, while Stefanie Martini will play Sophia de Haviland – but they're not the only big names on board.

Bona-fide A-lister Glenn Close also stars as Lady Edith, alongside X Files' Gillian Anderson as Magda Leonides, Mad Men's Christina Hendricks as Brenda Leonides, and Sherlock's Amanda Abbington as Clemency Leonides.

But the big names aren't just in front of the camera – they're also behind it, too.

Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay alongside Tim Rose Price and Dark Places' Gilles Paquet-Brenner, with Brenner also directing.

Channel 5's decision to air Crooked House follows the news that the BBC has pulled one of its planned Agatha Christie adaptations, Ordeal by Innocence, from its Christmas schedule.

Crooked House is expected to air some time in December.
