We doubt we'd ever see Jamie Dornan's father popping up in Fifty Shades of Grey - it might be a bit creepy - but Professor Jim Dornan will appear in an episode of The Fall this week.

And Jamie apparently had no idea that his dad - a retired obstetrician and gynaecologist, who had once considered acting as a career - would be cameoing in the police thriller.

Explaining how he became involved, Professor Dornan told The Belfast Telegraph's Sunday Life: "It was the writer and producer Allan Cubitt's idea.

"I met Alan socially and he asked me to take part in The Fall. Jamie had finished filming and had no idea I was going to be in it. It came as a real surprise when he found out."

Jim will play Policing Board member John Porter in Thursday night's episode, and will quiz John Lynch's Chief Constable over the ongoing case of the Belfast Strangler.

"John Lynch was lovely - he was very helpful," Jim continued. "He had kind words when I got it right and smiled sweetly when I got it wrong. I really enjoyed it and it was a very interesting morning. I would say it was awe-inspiring.

"I was very impressed with the professionalism of everyone involved in the production and the detail they went into to get things right."

He even thought that the scene would be scrapped altogether, admitting: "I thought my scene would end up on the cutting room floor! I'm looking forward to watching it this week."

Jamie stars as serial killer Paul Spector in the gripping series co-starring Gillian Anderson as DSI Stella Gibson.

The Fall continues on Thursday (October 6) on BBC Two at 9pm.
