Fans of Jamie Dornan's black comedy The Tourist better not hold their breath for a third season despite the huge cliffhanger.

The series, which premiered in 2022, stars Dornan as an Irish man waking up in Australia with no recollection of who he is. The drama moved to Ireland for its second season, giving viewers a big clue about The Man's real identity in its final scenes.

The huge cliffhanger has left fans to wonder if the series would come back, though writers Harry and Jack Williams provided a disappointing update as they shared there are currently no plans for another instalment.

"Jamie's great and we loved doing it, [but] I think it'd be tough." Jack told RadioTimes.com. "We don't have an idea. I think if he came to us and said, 'I'm desperate to do one', we'd have a go.

"We'd have a think because it would be really fun. We'd have to make sure it was good, but I don't think it'd be something we go out and try."

"And there's only so many times, as the jumping off point for a three season arc, that's quite a long way to," added Harry. "He knows who he is by season three, pretty much. By the end of [season] two, they kind of both did. They'd reached an end point."

In the final scene of season two, it becomes apparent that Dornan's character Eugene Cassidy seems to have been a spy all along, with a burning document teasing his identity in a shot just for the audience.

"For us, that's more like a fun grace note that all along he was actually this thing," Jack said, with Harry adding that he "preferred" the idea that Eugene "never gets to know" the true nature of his past.

"So we'd try [for season three], because he's [Dornan] brilliant and we love the cast of that show, and [Danielle Macdonald's] brilliant, and it was so much fun to do," Jack said. "But it would be difficult, probably. But if he wanted to, we'd give it a go."

Last year, Dornan weighed in on the possibility of a third season, saying it would probably be set in the Netherlands after season two saw Eugene relocate to Amsterdam with Helen Chambers (Macdonald).

The Tourist is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
