Emmy Award host Jimmy Kimmel blamed television producer Mark Burnett for making Donald Trump happen in his open monologue, but it's Julia Louis-Dreyfus who took responsibility for his presidential campaign.

During her "thank you" speech, the Veep actresses apologised for the "current political climate" in the United States that has Trump running as the Republican nominee for the presidential seat against Democratic nominee Hilary Clinton.

Louis-Dreyfus said: "I'd like to take this opportunity to personally apologise for the current political climate. Our show started as a political satire, but it now feels like a sobering documentary."

"So I certainly do promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it."

Burnett is the creator of the reality programme The Apprentice where contestant would compete for a spot in Trump's real estate company.

Louis-Dreyfus was accepting her fifth consecutive trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at this Sunday night's ceremony in Los Angeles.
