EastEnders has decisively won the battle of the soaps at this year's National Television Awards, as it was named Best Serial Drama for the second year running.

The BBC's primetime drama beat rivals Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks, following on from Danny Dyer's best Serial Drama Performance win earlier in the evening.

Accepting the award from Ian Lavender and Blake Harrison - the former and current Pike from Dad's Army - the sizeable cast took a while to get on stage before Kellie Bright led the acceptance.

"Thank you so much for voting for us, it means so much," she said. After thanking the BBC and the producers, she paid tribute to "commander-in-chief" Dominic Treadwell-Collins, adding that they only won the award because the showrunner "lives and breathes this show".

The win follows a huge year for EastEnders, which celebrated its 30th anniversary and saw the return of Kathy Beale, the week-long live episodes which revealed the dramatic twist in the death of Lucy Beale, and the ongoing drama of the Carters.

And it's another success for the BBC, which cleared up with Doctor Foster - winning best New Drama and Drama Peformance for Suranne Jones - and won the Entertainment category with Great British Bake Off for the second year.
