Harlan Coben's new year thriller Run Away is tipped to be a shocking watch as lead stars tease "pure terror" moments. The upcoming Netflix series, which centres on a family man's relentless search for his estranged daughter, stars Missing You's James Nesbitt and Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones.

When talking about Coben's other series, Lazarus, Jones told Digital Spy: "There's a bit in there, which terrified me so much, this noise came out of my body that I've never heard before. It was terror, pure terror."

When asked if viewers could expect any moments like that from Run Away, co-star Nesbitt confirmed: "There are a few."

Nesbitt went on to praise Coben's knack for twisty, shocking storytelling, sharing: "[It's] such a skill, and to be able to replicate it as much as he does, time and time again and he still manages to, at times, trick his viewers, into thinking, something that doesn't actually then turn out to be the case.

"It's a real skill and also to invest these characters with truthful journeys and emotions, even through extraordinary circumstances… he's very good."

During the same exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Jones shared her experience of filming her first scene with Nesbitt.

"I was nervous because I am a massive fan of Jimmy's," she said. "I think he's a brilliant actor, and so to be in a scene with [him]... it is quite scary when you're going to work with somebody who you haven't met before and you haven't worked with before."

She added that she "really enjoyed that first scene".

Nesbitt shared Jones' sentiment, stating that they were "really lucky" to have bonded on set.

"[It was] important that we got on as well as [our characters] got on," said Nesbitt. "They're quite a double act in [the show]… They really do need each other."

The pair went on to share what viewers could expect from Run Away's finale, with Jones likening the viewing experience to watching the critically acclaimed 90s movie The Sixth Sense.

"I think the joy sometimes of watching something like the film The Sixth Sense [is] when you watch it back a second time, you get an extra layer of satisfaction. So I think once you've watched Run Away, then you go back and watch it again from the beginning, knowing what you know from the finale, it's such a lovely feeling."

Nesbitt added: "[Harlan shows] are rollercoasters, and they do take different twists. All the different strands come together, in a sense, to create, usually, a really explosive ending with a big twist.

"With [Run Away, there are a few twists] it just ramps up. One thing happens and another happens. It just becomes relentless."

Run Away will stream on Netflix from 1 January 2026.
