Gangs of London season 3 spoilers follow – major ones, including its ending.

Gangs of London has always been a shockingly brutal show that's never been afraid to kill off its major players (ahem, Paapa Essiedu's Alex Dumani). However season three has just taken things to a whole other level.

The new episodes of the hit Sky drama were jam-packed, but by the final episode you may have been left wondering whether or not there's going to be a fourth season in store. Join us as we dig into everything we know so far about Gangs of London season four.

Let's start with the death of titular gangster, Sean Wallace (Joe Cole).

What to Read Next

Cole's Sean escaped prison, only to be hunted down by the gangs who initially assumed he was behind the spiked cocaine. However it was new player Zeek (Andrew Koji) who was the one to capture Sean, and the assassin savagely ended his life without hesitation, knocking Sean off the board indefinitely.

His death was later followed by the demise of another top gang leader Ed Dumani (Lucian Msamati), at the hands of Marian (Michelle Fairley). This came after it was discovered that Ed was the one who sent Zeek after her son Sean.

The final major death was that of her other son Billy (Brian Vernel) who, wracked with remorse, confessed to his part in the death of Elliott's (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù) wife and child some years back.

He pushed the gun towards a reeling Elliott, urging Elliott to shoot him and a gunshot was heard. As Billy's 'death' took place off screen, there's some natural debate over whether Elliott actually went through with the murder. For all we know, he could have shot into the air out of frustration – but in lieu of a season four, the assumption is that Billy is dead.

Of course we cannot forget Asif (Asif Raza Mir), another top gangster, who had his neck sliced by Lale (Narges Rashidi). This came after he stole her child and put her through hell for over a year.

We'd argue that the show could survive without him. But can the same be said for the others?

It's hard to imagine what Gangs of London would look like without Sean. We'd extend this to Ed and even Billy, to some extent.

Away from the cast, the way that the third season unfolded also has implications from a plot point of view.

The mayor's newly-approved scheme, to trial legalising drugs in London, will have a direct impact on the gangs, cutting them off from the desperate souls looking to feed their vice.

So can Gangs of London continue after this turn of events?

Despite the air of finality in the finale of the third season, there are still some loose strings.

Our main character Elliott is still wracked with guilt over the person he's become, someone so far removed from the man his wife would have wanted him to be. For all intents and purposes, he's a broken man. Would they really finish his arc like this, or is there a chance for a better resolution?

As for our other burning questions: Is Billy actually dead? Will Marian discover that Lale's son (who she also knows is Sean's son) is in fact alive and well in London, contrary to what Asif had told her?

Digital Spy caught up with leading star Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, who weighed in on the possibility of a season four.

"There's an air of uncertainty at the end of season three," Dìrísù told us. "And I think we could feel that in the [final] performance [between Billy and Elliott.] I don't know which way this is going to go. Neither does Brian.

"I don't know if the writers know which way it's going to go, so the air was pregnant with possibility, with uncertainty, and then with the history of the shoot so far, I think it's just raw."

When asked more directly about whether or not there would be a season four, Dìrísù said: "I don't know. I think, as always, it's up to the viewers.

"The more people that watch it, the more people that engage with it, the more likely we are to continue to make it. So if people want to find out what happens next, you have to watch it and find out."

As of time of writing, there's been no official word as to whether or not Gangs of London will be renewed for a fourth season – but we'll update you as soon as we hear anything official.

Gangs of London season 3 is available as a box set on Sky Atlantic and the streaming service Now.
