Call the Midwife star Rebecca Gethings has opened up about the "spooky" encounters she's experienced on set.

The actor, who plays Sister Veronica on the BBC show, has said that she and her co-stars have witnessed some "weird goings on" in the building where they film, such as "lights going on and off and spooky male laughter in the corridor to the women’s toilets".

"I never go there on my own," she continued, before saying that the building also appears to haunted by an Edwardian lady.

"Just outside Dr Turner’s office, our medic heard a bang when they were locking up for the night," Gethings explained.

"She went running in and took a photo in the dark, and when you zoom in, there is the figure of an Edwardian lady holding what looks like a pig."

Sunday night's (January 26) episode of Call the Midwife saw Molly Vevers make her debut as Sister Catherine Cantwell, described as a "postulant nun preparing for her full initiation into the Sisters of Raymond Nonnatus, and life as a midwife in Poplar".

Vevers' mum shared her pride in the comments of a social media post after the episode aired, while the drama's cast also showed support for their new cast member.

"Our lovely Molly who plays Sister Catherine, it feels like she's been here forever actually. She's fitted in so beautifully," said Gethings, while Sister Julienne actor Jenny Agutter said: "It's a lovely character that she plays.

"Real youthful, energetic. [A] desire to be involved, to illustrate how much she cares and how much she feels for her faith. Which is lovely for Sister Julienne, because she can remember those things."

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
