Call the Midwife star Molly Vevers has received a touching message from her mum after taking up her new role on the BBC drama.

Vevers, known for starring in Prime Video's The Rig, debuted on Call the Midwife latest episode as postulant Sister Catherine Cantwell.

The actor's mum, Caroline, expressed her pride at her daughter's new appointment on the show's official Facebook page, posting: "I'm one very proud Mumma! I know how hard Molly has worked to get to this point. For me, it feels like all the hours sitting in a car outside rehearsals and auditions is starting to pay off."

The Call the Midwife official page responded to her words of support, adding: "Molly is a CREDIT to you, Caroline! We LOVE her."

"Sister Catherine is a young woman who comes to Nonnatus House as a postulant nun," she explained.

"She has a lot on her plate," the actor added, discussing the studying her character has to do ahead of taking her first vows and for her midwifery exams.

"She's bright and eager and really intelligent, but I think she's just navigating a lot of different things in her life when we meet her."

The cast of the period drama also rallied round to show their new cast member support, with Sister Veronica actor Rebecca Gethings stating in the video: "Our lovely Molly who plays Sister Catherine, it feels like she's been here forever actually. She's fitted in so beautifully."

Jenny Agutter also reflected on Molly's start in the show. "It's a lovely character that she plays," said the Sister Julienne star.

"Real youthful, energetic. [A] desire to be involved, to illustrate how much she cares and how much she feels for her faith. Which is lovely for Sister Julienne, because she can remember those things."

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
