Coronation Street, Downton Abbey and Strictly Come Dancing were among the winners at tonight's (January 23) National Television Awards.

The Weatherfield soap picked up the 'Best Serial' gong ahead of its rivals EastEnders, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale, with 'Best Serial Drama Performance' handed to Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs on the long-running show.

However, EastEnders' David Witts was handed the 'Best Newcomer' award, ahead of Natalie Gumede - who plays Halsall's on-screen fiancée Kirsty in Coronation Street - Emmerdale's Liam Fox and Joseph Thompson from Hollyoaks.

Downton Abbey fought off Doctor Who, Merlin and Sherlock to claim 'Best Drama', while Strictly Come Dancing triumphed in the 'Best Talent Show' category.

Other victors included QI for 'Best Comedy Panel Show', I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! for 'Best Entertainment Programme', and Ant & Dec scooped another award in the 'Best Entertainment Presenter' category.

The Landmark Award was handed to members of the British Olympic and Paralympic teams to pay homage to the sports stars for their part in the 2012 London Games, while the Special Recognition Award was given to Joanna Lumley.
