The Sandman writer Neil Gaiman has warned fans that they should not "gatekeep" the new acclaimed Netflix series.
The writer was doing a Q&A on Twitter when someone asked him if the show can be enjoyed by people who hadn't read the comics.
He replied: "Absolutely enjoyable for those of you who haven't read Sandman. We made it as much for you as for the people who had read Sandman."
What to Read Next
After seeing this message, one person responded by saying there are fans that tend to be hostile towards people who have not read the comics. This was when Neil insisted that "everyone is welcome" to explore the world of the Sandman.

"Nobody gets to gatekeep Sandman," he wrote in a tweet. "Not as a comic, not in the Audible adaptation and definitely not on the TV.
"There's no entrance exam, nor should there be. Everyone is welcome."
Digital Spy recently spoke to Gaiman along with executive producer Allan Heinberg in an interview, where they discussed which actors surprised them the most on set and which ones completely encompassed the characters they were meant to play.
"I would point to Tom Sturridge and Mason Alexander Park as people who gave us what we'd hoped for. Everything we dreamed of, they just came, and they gave us our thing," said Gaiman.

"I would point to Boyd Holbrook, The Corinthian, as somebody who gave us something that we were not expecting, which was: we were expecting charm. But what we got was a rather genuine niceness and gentleness, and the idea that: 'Yes, this character is absolutely the patron saint of serial killers. Yes, he's an escaped nightmare, walking the Earth'.
"And by the end, you feel rather sympathetic for him. If you were alive, and you were this thing, and this is what you've been made to be, you'd want him to carry on, too. I mean, that was a surprise. That felt like something that grew in the making."
The Sandman is now streaming on Netflix.
