The Sandman season one spoilers follow.

The Sandman season two finally has a release date, which is good news for fans who have been chomping at the bit for someone to tie up the loose ends left from season one.

The new season will arrive on 3 July and will be split into two parts, with the second arriving on 24 July (as confirmed via Netflix's official Instagram account).

The adaptation of Neil Gaiman's graphic novel series ended in victory for the dark and mysterious Morpheus. During his quest to reclaim his emblems stolen while in captivity, the master of the dreaming became more powerful than ever before.

Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer hasn't quite finished with this Endless being. In fact, she's hell-bent on destroying Morpheus. She'll have to wait in line, though, as it seems the Endless siblings Desire and Despair are claiming first dibs.

So, what can we expect from another season? Here's everything we know about The Sandman season two.

The Sandman season 2 potential release date: When's it on?

As mentioned above, season two of The Sandman will make its way to Netflix with Vol 1 on 3 July. Vol 2 will follow shortly after on 24 July. The announcement came via Instagram, with a brand new trailer showing the enigmatic Dream and his eclectic siblings in the thick of chaos.

The post was captioned: "The dream king returns. THE SANDMAN: SEASON 2," followed by the release dates.

Tudum has revealed that the second season will consist of 11 episodes in total – six in Vol 1 and five in Vol 2.

Tom Sturridge previously revealed in a BTS clip during Geeked Week that the start of season two would find Dream "in a place of rebuilding."

"He's determined to go back and account for his behaviour in the past," added Heinberg in the short teaser video, but the trailer has hinted at trouble to come – more on that below.

The Sandman season 2 cast: Who will be coming back?

New Endless siblings have been cast for season two of The Sandman, with Adrian Lester joining the party as big brother Destiny and Esmé Creed-Miles taking on the role of the mysterious youngest sibling Delirium.

According to the showrunner Allan Heinberg, we're also set to meet "the mysterious The Prodigal (Barry Sloane) who abandoned the family 300 years ago — and whom Dream cannot forgive", according to Tudum. What fun they will no doubt bring!

Aside from that, Tom Sturridge will of course reprise the role of Morpheus, breathing life into Dream through his deep, measured, dulcet tones and air of otherworldliness.

Of course, his right-hand woman Lucienne would have to be by his side, and so we expect the return of Vivienne Acheampong.

An Endless needs a foe, and Lucifer Morningstar (aka Gwendoline Christie) fits the bill perfectly. So the chances are high for her return, although Lucifer is curiously absent from the trailer.

Speaking of foes, enemies come in all forms, including sibling rivalry. Despite Destiny's implied call for unity in the season two trailer, Desire and Despair will still likely be prepped to cause trouble, and we can't wait to see Mason Alexander Park and Donna Preston in action.

We also expect/hope the following will reprise their roles:

Kirby as Death
• Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine
• Vanesu Samunyai as Rose Walker
• Eddie Karanja as Jed Walker
• Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven
• Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain
• Asim Chaudhry as Abel
• Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall

Sadly, we're unlikely to see the return of the slippery, evil Corinthian (played by Boyd Holbrook) as he was defeated by Morpheus.

The King of Dreams vowed to recreate his faulty nightmare again with more thoughtfulness. But if he does make a reappearance, we doubt it will be in season two as his story arc came to a satisfying close.

Speaking on the odds of the character's return, Holbrook told Digital Spy: "Is he ever gone? Is anything ever gone?

"He's reincarnated later on [in the comics] as a different entity, as a good guy. So I think that's something really fun to play with, to already know him as this dark entity, and to see what a lighter entity of The Corinthian would look like."

Other characters whose stories have come to a natural end are Gilbert (aka Fiddler's Green), who transformed into his true form as a meadow, and Hob Gadling, who will continue to bask in his immortality. We hope Stephen Fry and Ferdinand Kingsley will reprise their roles for cameos, but we wouldn't anticipate anything larger.

One character we hope to see again is Nada (played by Deborah Oyelade). We only caught a glimpse of Morpheus' former lover while trapped in the pits of hell. There, she states only his forgiveness will free her from eternal damnation – but despite loving her, Morpheus cannot bring himself to let go of the past.

Surely the creators haven't planted this seed here for it to remain in the ground. With that in mind, we expect a Nada tale to unfold shortly.

The Sandman season 2 plot: What will happen?

Heinberg has already confirmed that season two will focus on telling Dream's story stating: "The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season."

The showrunner told Tudum that "this season is about Dream's having to accept responsibility for his arrogance, for his ignorance, and for his feelings, which he doesn't even admit to having.

"But sooner or later, we all have to reckon with the fact that the struggles we face are often of our own making. Dream must now figure out what to do about it."

Heinberg also explained that season two of The Sandman will pick up a few weeks after the events of season one and that while Dream "vows to leave the past behind and look to the future, the past, of course, has other ideas."

As mentioned earlier, Desire and Despair are sure to remain a thorn in Morpheus's side. It was made clear that Desire would double down on their efforts to bring Morpheus to his knees, so a plot is brewing.

A possible team-up between them and Lucifer would make complete sense, as they also intend to destroy the king of dreams.

There are other characters' fates that also need addressing, in particular Rose, who could be in for a rough ride. Having given her heart to her grandmother to get rid of the vortex within, she is left unable to love. If this is slowly unfolding, it's likely to wreak havoc upon her life in unimaginable ways.

The relationship between Nada and Morpheus could also be explored further. In the comics, he saw her suicide as a betrayal and sentenced her to hell as penance. An extremely harsh punishment, but it's to be taken with a pinch of salt as the show may deviate from the comic book origins. It would be interesting to see how their on-screen story unfolds.

There is also the fate of Lyta's newborn son to contend with. When the veil between the real world and the dreaming was made unstable by the Vortex, Lyta was able to conceive the child with her dead husband during a dream.

Morpheus made claims on the child as one of his creations and vowed to return for him once born.

While Morpheus agreed that Rose had suffered enough and that he would not pursue her, it is unclear whether that 'generosity' extends to her friend Lyta and her child.

His attempts to remove the baby from Lyta could have devastating consequences for the Endless being, who underestimated the might of a grieving human once before in Roderick Burgess.

It's unlikely that we'll see all those storylines addressed in the final season, so we'll have to wait and see which direction season two takes.

The Sandman season 2 trailer: When can I watch it?

The Sandman season two trailer is here – see above – and will certainly get fans hyped.

It opens on Destiny who, with a regal air of authority, calls his Endless siblings together, starting with "brother Dream" followed by Death (whom he refers to as sister), Desire, Despair and the youngest and most anticipated of all the Endless, Delirium.

After much build-up in season one, Creed-Miles' Delirium enters the scene – and already she doesn't disappoint.

Destiny states, "It has been centuries since we have been all together," to which Dream replies: "It will be interesting to find out why you've called us here."

And in the most cryptic manner possible, Destiny says: "Perhaps for you more than any of us, my brother." We. Are. Sat!

There's talk of "oldest battles beginning once more" and kings forsaking kingdoms against a backdrop of chaos and dragons – all hinting at a stunning conclusion for The Sandman series.

The Sandman is now available to stream on Netflix.
