Peaky Blinders spoilers follow.

Peaky Blinders' season 5 finale left us with many questions: What will happen to Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) after he held a gun to his own head? Who double-crossed him? And what will happen between him and Michael Gray (Finn Cole)?

Season 5 and 6 director Anthony Byrne has now answered one of those burning questions that fans have about the season 5 finale and it's bad news for anyone who's keen on the idea of some kind of romance between Gina Grey (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin).

One scene in the episode shows Oswald having sex with a blonde woman before he gives his final speech at the British Union of Fascists rally, but you don't see her face. This has led some fans to speculate about whether it could have been Gina, potentially setting up another storyline for season 6.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy during a live-streamed video interview (which you can watch above), Byrne said that the mystery woman isn't intended to be Gina.

What to Read Next

"No, no, it's not," he said. "I would've shown Anya Taylor-Joy, there would have been a reason, it would have been more shocking to see her and know once and for all. But no, I don't remember her name, she was a really lovely woman who came in and did that scene.

"Doing sex scenes is always really difficult anyway, but usually you're working with somebody you've spent weeks, or months with, but this is just somebody that comes in that morning or that day. She was great, really lovely, it's as much for Sam as well, he's playing this guy who is really aggressive and it was the same with Brenda who played the swan (from Swan Lake), a really, really cool woman.

"It's just those conversations, working out the action and making sure at every point both people know exactly what is going to happen, so nothing is improvised at all and then creating a kind of comfortable environment on the set. But it definitely wasn't Anya Taylor Joy and it certainly wasn't a stand-in for her character. So yeah, no is the answer."

However there is definitely a suggestion that they might still be working together in the BBC drama's next season. There were some interesting glances exchanged between Oswald and Gina at the ballet and she knew exactly who he was when he arrived.

Some fan theories have suggested that she could be Oswald's spy and that is how he knew all about her husband Michael's favourite Detroit clubs.

Whether she really is working for Oswald or not Gina, her family are set to be key players in the next season with Michael running the drug trade for the Peaky Blinders.

Byrne has previously described Gina as being from "an influential family" and promised that there is a lot to be revealed about her, saying: "She's a player, she's a manipulator. She's part of a wider plan."

Peaky Blinders season 5 is on iPlayer and Netflix now. Obsessed With… Peaky Blinders - hosted by Digital Spy's Editor, Laurence Mozafari - is out now and available to listen to on BBC Sounds.
