35 sex toys were lost or abandoned on London's tube, trains and buses last year

According to TFL, 35 sex toys were lost by travellers on London's tube, buses and trains last year.

The toys were a tiny minority of the 329,205 total items left by commuters and visitors on the transport network in the past 12 months, and they were clearly missed; 15 of the devices were reclaimed by their owners from TFL.

In recent years the London transport body has taken to publishing an annual report of the weird and wonderful detritus left aboard its various services. The sheer quantity of items (and diversity of London's transport users) ensures for entertaining reading.

As reported by The Sun, over the past year, 34,362 phones, 45,218 bags, 91,867 books and 12,535 sets of keys ended up at the Baker Street lost property office, alongside more unusual items like 135 wigs, 744 crutches and even four batches of Viagra.

And all kinds of other items have been left aboard London services in recent years, including prosthetic legs, "enough musical instruments to form a band", and famously an urn containing ashes which was reunited with its owner seven years after it went missing on the network.

Only around 20% of the items are claimed or returned to their rightful owners.

If items remain unclaimed and are of value, TFL sells them off at auction. In the year 2015/16 it made £358,608 by selling unclaimed items.

Sometimes an auction isn't even necessary; TFL also made £243,076 through lost, unclaimed cash in the same year.

We doubt, however, that any of the 20 remaining sex toys, owner-less as they are, will be among the items sold to the highest bidder.
