2026 is a big year for the Resident Evil franchise. The new film reboot from Weapons director Zach Cregger is coming out in September, mainline entry Requiem released in February to strong reviews, and now the newest remake has been announced.

While new versions of the first game, prequel Zero, and next mainline entry 5 were all rumoured, the longest-running rumour of them all is Resident Evil - Code: Veronica getting the remake treatment. And it turns out that the hearsay is true.

Announced at the Summer Game Fest, Resident Evil Veronica is a from-the-ground-up recreation of the year 2000's Dreamcast title, using the same RE Engine that has powered every game since 2017's Resi 7: Biohazard.

Set after the events of the original trilogy and serving as a bridge between it and Resi 5, the game follows Claire Redfield as she looks for her brother Chris.

As we see in the trailer, she heads to France to track him down, but is captured and taken to Rockfort Island, a prison facility where Umbrella Corporation are conducting more human experiments. Then, of course, all hell breaks loose.

What to Read Next

We won't go into spoilers from the original as the trailer goes out of its way to not show us much after the France scene, which includes a brief flash of a person in white gloves and a red jacket descending the stairs, an ornate pair of pistols, and ants tearing apart the corpse of a dragonfly.

Capcom is teasing the story has been "reimagined", so things might turn out quite differently to the original, even more so than previous remakes.

The gameplay will also be modernised, although we don't see any of it. The France scene is in first-person, but it could perhaps follow Requiem and allow you to shift between perspectives.

Requiem also had a dual protagonist system, with Grace's sections focusing more on survival horror and Leon's on action. Could Veronica try something similar with Claire and Chris?

Resident Evil Veronica will be released in 2027 on PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The new Resident Evil film is set to release on 18 September.
