For some time now, we mere mortals have been required to exercise patience when it comes to receiving our online orders.

This is especially frustrating at Christmas, when you somehow forget you can't get away with ordering your presents 48 hours before the big day.

Thanks to the folks over at Amazon, though, nabbing items within 30 minutes is actually becoming a reality.

The retail giant's expansion into the drone delivery game has been teased for some time, but CEO Jeff Bezos today announced it has undergone its first live drop —tucked away in a remote-ish area of Cambridge.

"First-ever #AmazonPrimeAir customer delivery is in the books," he wrote on Twitter. "13 min—click to delivery."

As you can see from the video above, the service will begin trialling in the UK (but only for two people, oddly) before likely seeing an expansion into more areas across the globe. It also appears as if a potential customers will require a landing mat for the drone to recognise and drop packages of up to five pounds.

For now, though, let's just hope the innovative deliveries don't fall foul of highly trained rogue eagles or powerful water guns held by nefarious characters.
