4. BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer makes this week's round-up because it's now a lot better on iPad.
That's because the Beeb's on-demand service is one of the first apps to support iOS 9's picture-in-picture viewing, allowing users to slide a shrunken video into the corner of the screen, freeing up display real estate so you can use your tablet for something else.
iPlayer is also undergoing major changes on Android, where the BBC has launched a beta version of the player so users can test drive new feature before they launch.
5. Move to iOS
Available On: Android
Price: Free
Publisher: Apple
If you picked up an iPhone 6S Plus this week and you're jumping ship from Android, you're going to need this app.
Apple's first Android app is a bit of a cheeky one - it helps users carry their messages, contacts, pictures, calendar events, emails, and bookmarks over to their new iOS device and then advises them to recycle their old Google handset at the nearest Apple Store.
As is always the way, Apple has been seriously trolled since entering enemy territory, so if this app is of no use to you, you may at least get a good laugh out of some of the comments on Google Play.
6. Microsoft Send
Available on: Android, iOS
Price: Free
Publisher: Microsoft
Microsoft's latest Garage project is a service that makes email more like texting, so you can chat away without having to faff about with things like subject lines or your overflowing inbox.
Only messages sent through the app are visible in Send, whisking you away from the distractions of your standard inbox. Any emails you receive though will still be visible in the usual places.
There are a few caveats - the number of supported email providers is thin on the ground at launch and an Office 365 account is required to take advantage of Send.
7. Total Commander
Available on: Windows Phone
Price: Free
Publisher: Ghisler Software GmbH
Total Commander is a file manager app for Windows Phone devices that is based on the 22-year-old Windows Commander series of programmes.
Not only does it help you take a closer look at your phone's storage to see what is hogging the memory, it also includes a handy zip/unzip tool.
With an easy and intuitive interface, Total Commander gives you complete command over all of the files stored on your handset.

The age where great stories were exclusive to paper is long behind us, and Hooked is an app that aims to take advantage of that by catering for fiction fans on smartphone.
Developer Telepathic commissions short stories and dishes them out to subscribers in the form of text messages, spinning each tale in bite-sized chunks tailored for mobile.
The next great novel is unlikely to be told through the medium of text message, but you can't knock Telepathic for experimenting with a new and modern approach to storytelling.
9. Seedling Comic Studio
