A Monster's Expedition, one of the best puzzle games in recent years, is getting a short spin-off.

2020's block-pushing game involved the player rolling logs to create bridges and rafts in order to reach new areas. It followed a monster character exploring a series of islands showcasing exhibits of everyday objects used by humans.

Today, developer Draknek & Friends announced that the monster character is returning in The Electrifying Incident: A Mini-Monster Expedition.

A demo for the game is available to play now, with the full release confirmed for later this year in April.

This time around, the puzzles revolve around a mechanical grabber-arm. With this tool, the monster can lift and move boxes around from a distance. These boxes can be placed on switches on the ground to navigate past electrical hazards and locked doors.

Taking place in a mysterious facility, the monster must progress through a series of rooms to reach the malfunctioning reactor.

It's a much shorter game, designed to be played and completed in one sitting. The developer says that it can take between 30 and 90 minutes to reach the ending. The game's announcement coincides with the tenth anniversary of A Good Snowman Is Hard to Build's release.

A fun fact about The Electrifying Incident is that it is a reimagining of a small title called Cyber-Lasso that Alan Hazelden developed back in 2014 for a game jam.

A Monster's Expedition received plenty of praise across its multiple versions including for PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. It has an OpenCritic top critic average score of 85 and was a finalist in two categories at the 2021 Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards.

Last year, we called it a "creative" and "underrated gem" when compiling a list of our favourite Nintendo Switch games.

"It's full of rewarding mechanics and moments that make it a delight to play," we added at the time.

Late last year, Draknek & Friends published LOK Digital, which received an honourable mention for Excellence in Design at this year's IGF Awards.

The Electrifying Incident: A Mini-Monster Expedition launches in April on Steam and itch.io. A demo is out now.
