Coronation Street's Maureen Lipman reveals why she turned down Strictly Come Dancing

"I'd cry and there's too much crying on TV already, isn't there?"

Maureen Lipman has weighed in on her decision to turn down an appearance on reality TV stalwart Strictly Come Dancing.

Currently playing Tyrone's feisty grandmother Evelyn Plummer in Coronation Street, the actress sat down with Prima magazine, where she admitted that she had been asked to do the show before but "couldn't do it", because she thinks she'd be "terrible at taking criticism" in front of millions of viewers.

"I'd cry and there's too much crying on TV already, isn't there?" she said.

Maureen isn't keen on the idea of other reality TV shows either, adding: "I don't want to walk a pilgrimage or do a cookery show either. What could be worse than trying to talk and make a frittata at the same time?"

Elsewhere during the interview, Maureen, whose career spans theatre, TV and film, added that she doesn't plan to stop "any time soon", and shared her hopes of being in "a drama series one day".
