Casualty star Nigel Harman has teased what's ahead for his character Max Cristie before his upcoming exit.

Nigel confirmed earlier this month that he would be leaving his role as Max next year, and had already filmed his final scenes.

On screen, viewers know that Max has been diagnosed with kidney failure, and desperately needs a transplant to prolong his life.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy on the red carpet at the Inside Soap Awards 2023, where he won the award for best drama star, Nigel said: "Max, as we know, is having a bit of a health crisis.

"He's in denial about that – he's been having a bit of an affair, I think we know about that – and his health, let's say, becomes very problematic. And his question is whether or not to accept help from Jodie, which he doesn't want to do.

"It's that fight within him of whether or not he can allow someone else to help him, so we'll see what happens."

Nigel is currently competing in this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing, where he is partnered up with Katya Jones – who joined him on the red carpet.

Discussing how he's finding the Strictly experience so far, Nigel said: "We've started off really well. It's been a few ups and downs in the rehearsal room. It's a hell of a thing.

"Luckily I've got Kat, who's one of the best teachers and a great person. She's just gently steering me through and then somehow we manage to land something on Saturday night.

"We are doing something I can't tell you about, which may involve spinning. There's a bit of magic in it. Not yet because it's technically really hard! But soon hopefully the magic will arrive, hopefully before Saturday night."

Katya added: "It's very, very different from what we displayed on week one but it's exciting."

Since the Inside Soap Awards, it's been confirmed that Nigel and Katya's routine this week will involve spinning, as they'll be performing a Viennese waltz during Saturday night's (September 30) show.
