A British theatre site has offered an apology to Derry Girls actress Nicola Coughlan after it described her as an "overweight little girl".

The star, who plays Clare on the Channel 4 show, is currently appearing in a production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie at the Donmar Warehouse.

In a review in the British Theatre Guide, writer Philip Fisher described Coughlan as Joyce Emily in the production as "the kind of overweight little girl who will always become the butt of her fellows' immature humour".

The actress posted a screenshot of the line and wrote on Twitter: "Hi @BritTheatreGuid, for the second time your reviewer Philip Fisher has come to see a show I'm in, and as part of reviewing the show he has also reviewed my body. How can you continue to support this?"

She also noted that Fisher the reviewer had written that "Jess is a fat girl" in a review for another production last year, a line that appears to have now been removed.

"I know you are a theatre reviewer and your body has no relevance to your job but maybe you'd like me to cruelly review it for you and post it online," she added, saying that the reviewer was no longer welcome to review her shows.

In response, the British Theatre Guide apologised, writing on Twitter: "Nicola, we apologise unreservedly for the offence caused by the wording of this review.

"The offending words have been removed. While the reviewer may not have intended to offend, he accepts that it is not acceptable to use such descriptions in a review and not BTG policy."

Coughlan responded: "I would call this a bit of a tepid apology but I will accept if going forward you realise why it was so offensive and never review another woman's body's again.

"Also this is the second time Philip Fisher has done this to me, I'll take it that this is a belated apology for both."

She also revealed that she had declined an apology from Fisher, and had also declined an offer to appear on his podcast.
