The Conjuring: Last Rites, the fourth main instalment in the horror franchise, has released its first spooky first trailer.
The film, the ninth overall film in the saga, sees Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Wilson (Vera Farmiga) come out of retirement for one last case as they investigate a haunted house, with the pair being joined by daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) and her boyfriend Tony (Ben Hardy).
Based on the real-life Smurl haunting, the creepy trailer begins with glimpses at other icons from the series such as The Nun and Annabelle, before the Warrens head to Pennsylvania to uncover the mysteries of a haunted house.
Featuring the trademark creepy dolls, the trailer also promises a touch of gore with a blood-soaked kitchen, with Lorraine also getting a scare as a demonic being shares that they have been "patiently" waiting for them.
Helmed by Michael Chaves, who returns to the director's chair following 2021's The Devil Made Me Do It, Last Rites also stars Rebecca Calder and Elliot Cowan as the couple who enlist the Warrens to investigate the house.

In a recent interview, producer Peter Safran and Wilson recently explained the choice to use the Smurl haunting as the basis for the film, with Safran explaining that the case's significance in American culture was a major factor.
"[The Smurl case] percolated on a regular basis… It is one of the more Googleable ones," said the producer (via Entertainment Weekly). "It really fit the bill for us, being able to lean into something that audiences could go and Google after the movie.

"'Oh! They really did have that many children. Oh! They really were this age, and the grandparents really were there.' All of that stuff has always been meaningful to us," he continued, with Wilson adding that they wanted to "theatricalise" the story.
"We've known about this one for a long time," said the actor. "Then writers are playing around with how it affects the family and what's going on in the family's life. That's where we can really theatricalize it. We're not making a documentary."
The Conjuring: Last Rites is released in cinemas on 5 September.
