The neurosurgeon-turned-cosmic sorcerer has traditionally been depicted as being American through the 52-year history of the Marvel comic book.
Ethan Hawke reveals he came "close" to playing Marvel's Doctor Strange
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently told MTV News that no decisions have yet been made on if the big-screen version of Stephen Strange will be re-imagined as British yet.
"It's a good question," Feige said of Doctor Strange's accent. "We have not discussed the accent with him yet, but he's Benedict Cumberbatch, so I think he can do anything we ask him."
The executive also hinted that director Scott Derrickson could shoot some sections of Doctor Strange in New York.

"Scott Derrickson and the producing team are on a scout right now, finishing a scout in New York City for certain buildings that Doctor Strange inhabits," he teased. "They're on their way to London, where we'll be doing principal photography, starting in November. It's great.
"Benedict has been on a bit of a whirlwind tour up until now, but we're so excited. We are as excited to have him as he is to be a part of this universe. It's always a nice combination."
Doctor Strange has previously been described by Feige as the movie that will unlock the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Cumberbatch said earlier in the year that he does not consider joining a comic book franchise to be a career risk.
"Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods," he sad.
"It's very different, it's an Astral Plane. There's a huge new element to this Marvel universe that's going to be employed in building this story and this character.
"But you know, I'm really excited about it, about working with [director Scott Derrickson] whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they're doing."
Doctor Strange will be released on October 28, 2016 in the UK and in the US on November 4, 2016.
