X-Men: Days of Future Past star Hugh Jackman has said that he would be happy to play Wolverine until he dies.

The actor made the revelation in an interview with Cigar Aficionado, and admitted that watching Michael Keaton in Birdman inspired him to keep playing the role.

Jackman recalled: "I said to my wife, 'The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine. I've got to find a way to keep playing him until I die'."

However, the 46-year-old said that he would be happy if the part was eventually recast, because it would mean the role was important.

"I know that someday they'll recast the role with another actor," he said. "I'd be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic."

Jackman also said that he wants to push himself further both physically and emotionally for his next outing as Wolverine.

He explained: "I always want to be in better shape than I was for the last one. I don't believe in stagnation.

"People say they try to maintain the status quo. But I believe the natural cycle means you're either advancing and getting closer to something or you're receding… Every time I play Wolverine, I want to go further, physically and emotionally."

Sir Patrick Stewart recently teased the plot of the third Wolverine film, hinting that the clawed hero and Professor Xavier will work closely together.
