Marvel's X-Men reboot may be a long time in the making, but an exciting development has confirmed it will be worth the wait as the film is set to share some DNA with two acclaimed TV series.

Helmed by Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier, the upcoming X-Men film is expected to hit our screens at some point after Avengers: Secret Wars, which means we're probably looking at 2028.

In the meantime, Schreier has announced that he's at work developing the script with Netflix's Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and Thunderbolts* co-writer Joanna Calo, who's also the co-showrunner of The Bear. Calo's writing and executive producer credits also include beloved queer comedy Hacks and Netflix's BoJack Horseman.

Speaking with Collider, Schreier said: "We're still developing."

He added: "We worked together on season 1 of Beef and on Thunderbolts*. They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again."

What to Read Next

As for Lee, the writer is a self-proclaimed lover of the X-Men, particularly Gambit, more recently played by Channing Tatum in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine.

"I'm such a huge fan of X-Men. My dad was in town for my daughter's birthday recently. My mom and dad both were, and I told him the news about X-Men, and he was like, 'That's the good one, you know'," he said.

"I have such fond memories of me and my dad, Saturday morning, every morning, waking up, I think it was 9 or 10am central time, and we'd watch every single episode, read the comics, and I was a huge Gambit fan growing up, so the love is very strong."

Tatum is reportedly reprising the role of Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday, with more original X-Men stars confirmed to appear, including Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 18 December.
