Turns out a bit of film magic exists in Malaysia, as its cinema-goers have seemingly been granted their wish to watch the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast without any cuts.
Tweets from Malaysian cinema chains Golden Screens and TGV Cinemas – along with various reports – appear to confirm that they will now show the entire film, including the famous 'gay moment' that the Malaysian certification board wanted to cut.
Digital Spy has reached out to Disney for comment.
Disney previously withdrew the movie from cinemas in Malaysia after the country's censorship board said it would only release the film with a PG-13 rating if the 'gay moment' involving Gaston's right-hand man LeFou (Josh Gad) was removed.
Disney took the decision that it would not be edited and put the release date back to March 30, to allow Malaysia's board more time to decide whether or not to show it.
LeFou has been heralded as Disney's first-ever LGBTQ character, and while the relevant scene is hardly risqué (it's a Disney film after all), Malaysia usually only allows gay characters to be depicted on screen if they show repentance or are portrayed in a negative light.
What to Read Next
So, on top of Beauty and the Beast breaking box office records in its first 72 hours of release, it looks like it may make a little bit of Malaysian history too.
Beauty and the Beast's Lumière, Ewan McGregor, mocked the controversy around LeFou recently, joking: "There's a lot of gay sex in it, there's A LOT of gay sex in this film.
"If you live anywhere near Alabama you should NOT go and see this film... what would Jesus think?"
Beauty and the Beast is out now in UK and US cinemas – and hopefully soon in Malaysian ones too.
