Last time we saw Renton (Ewan McGregor) on screen in Trainspotting, he vowed to choose life over drugs.

But here we are 20 years later with the T2 Trainspotting release right around the corner, so naturally we have a few questions about how his new clean living plan turned out.

What to Read Next

Luckily for us, there's now a special behind-the-scenes featurette with Ewan McGregor to answer a few questions for us as he reveals that after the first film, Renton packed up and went straight to Amsterdam without looking back.

After getting his £16,000, McGregor reveals that Renton "went to Holland with the cash, and has lived there since", adding that he "has never, ever been home".

Renton has also replaced his heroin addiction with an addiction to endorphins and has become a runner, but he naturally has "a lot of baggage and a lot of guilt" when he returns to Scotland in the sequel.

"He's so broken when he comes back, he's really in a state," the star adds. "That's why he's back, because these are the only people that really know him or that he knows."

He continued: "It's not really what the audience expects Renton to be."

T2 will pick up the story of Renton alongside Begbie, Spud and Sick Boy a decade after the first movie.

Author Irvine Welsh said of the sequel: "In some ways, I think it's a better movieThey have become such iconic characters and this is going to cement that status even more."

McGregor has also said it will be a "new animal" of a movie that will stand out from the original.

And if that's not enough Trainspotting action for you, there has also been talk of a possible TV spin-off for the franchise to look forward to as well.

Trainspotting 2 will be hitting cinemas on January 27, 2017 in the UK and February 3 in the US. Watch a trailer below:
