Saoirse Ronan talked about reading Brooklyn for pleasure when she was about 16 - and then, years later, found herself starring in the film.

"I had just moved over here, and that's what made it so emotional," she said. There was no separation of her story and mine. I was very homesick and going through all that as I made the film."

As for the experience of being nominated? "It's so cold, but I'm so happy to be here. It's one of the best experiences I've ever had!"

John Boyega, nominated for Rising Star after his work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, said he was there to support John Williams, nominated for Best Score, and claimed that his new fame hadn't changed his life too much.

"I went to Waitrose this morning and bought a Belgian bun, so I'm OK," he joked.

It's back to work tomorrow as he starts shooting Star Wars: Episode 8 first thing in the morning, adding "I have a 6am pick-up. Rian [Johnson] has my heart already; he definitely deserves to take the helm from the great JJ Abrams."

Michael Fassbender, nominated for Steve Jobs, talked about the challenge of learning his lengthy Aaron Sorkin-written script. "There were a lot of words! At the beginning
when I see the script and it's 200 pages or so it's quite daunting, but it's worth
it for writing like that," he said. "It just takes some repetition."

Kate Winslet, also nominated for Steve Jobs, said, "The biggest pull for me initially was
knowing that Aaron Sorkin had written the script. Why would I not want to be in
that film? I would have to be a crazy person not to throw myself under a bus
for that role.

Steven Spielberg, whose Bridge Of Spies is up for nine awards, paid tribute to his British screenwriter, Matt Charman.

"Here is a British writer telling an
American director about a piece of American history that I knew nothing about.
So bravo to him for uncovering this story of James Donovan who did amazing
things in the 1950s and 1960s."

"It's chilly and lovely. There's something warm and such embracing fans tonight. I just appreciate the love," said Bryan Cranston, who's nominated for Trumbo. "I think the most fun I had in Trumbo was doing scenes in the bathtub, sitting in hot water relaxing. In fact Elle Fanning, my daughter in the movie, gave me these bathtub cuff links."
