Wicked: For Good is nearing a new milestone at the global box office after its second weekend of release, even if it did lose top spot at the US box office to Zootropolis 2. The new movie took records from Wicked with its huge opening last weekend, but does it stand a chance of outgrossing its predecessor?
Following its second weekend, Wicked: For Good has grossed $393.3 million worldwide, which includes $270.4 million from the US box office and $122.8 million from the international box office.
It still has a way to go before challenging Wicked's final total of $758.7 million worldwide, though. At the same stage in its run, Wicked stood at $359.2 million worldwide.
Wicked: For Good has already taken some records from Wicked, which it had previously set a year ago. The new movie delivered the biggest US opening ($147 million) and the biggest worldwide opening ($223 million) for a movie based on a Broadway musical, surpassing Wicked's $112.5 million US debut and $162.5 million worldwide debut.
Unfortunately for Wicked: For Good, the first movie has closed the gap after the new movie posted a bigger drop (57%) than Wicked at the US box office. After its second weekend, Wicked stood at $263.2 million having delivered a huge $118.2 million five-day total over the Thanksgiving weekend.
It's rare for a movie to post an increase week-on-week, so Wicked: For Good will need to hold better than Wicked in the weeks ahead to have a chance of challenging its final total. The first movie was also given a boost with a sing-along release over Christmas, something the new movie could also get.
What to Read Next
Even if it doesn't match the first movie, Wicked: For Good has other records to boast of. Ahead of its release, Wicked: For Good was already setting records for the best PG-rated ticket pre-sales of all time on Fandango, and the biggest pre-sales of the year for any movie in the US.
It's no surprise, then, that the movie also went on to record the biggest preview total ($30.8 million) and the biggest first day of the year ($68.6 million) in the US. However, it just fell short of the biggest debut of the year, behind A Minecraft Movie's $162.8 million bow at the US box office. Its $147 million opening does also mark the fourth-best-ever for Universal.
We'll be updating this page throughout Wicked: For Good's box-office run, so check back in the coming days and weeks to see how it's getting on – and the new records it's been setting along the way.
