Wicked has been a box-office phenomenon, particularly in the US, ahead of its digital release date this week..

The adaptation of the hit musical wasn't a guaranteed box-office success, despite how popular the musical is. But it has absolutely defied gravity expectations to become one of the biggest movies of the year.

But unless you've been following the box-office run of Wicked closely, you might be surprised by just how much money the movie has made.

That's where we come in, with a breakdown of just how much money Wicked has made so far, and the major records it has already broken.

Wicked's performance so far means that it's the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2024 worldwide.

Just how far Wicked can go will depend on how well it holds at the US box office, given that its overseas results are not quite as impressive as its domestic take.

It might have lost the top spot to Moana 2, but Wicked still banked the third biggest five-day Thanksgiving result ever with $118.2 million. That would be impressive in its opening weekend, and the musical achieved that in its second weekend.

Its $81.2 million Fri-Sun second weekend result marked a drop of only 28%, the best-ever week-on-week hold for a movie that opened over $100 million.

Wicked only dropped 38% in its fourth weekend and could still play well over the festive period at the US box office, especially as Sing-Along screenings start from Christmas Day in the US.

It is now the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time at the US box office, and it is now also the biggest non-Disney musical in the US ever following its third weekend results.

Worldwide, meanwhile, it has a little way to go to top Mamma Mia!'s $611.5 million result as the biggest stage-to-movie adaptation, but Wicked will soon be overtaking that result thanks to the Christmas period.

Once it overtakes Mamma Mia!, Wicked can add another record to its impressive haul, which already includes:

Biggest US opening for a movie based on a Broadway musical
• Biggest global opening for a movie based on a Broadway musical
• Biggest worldwide debut for a non-sequel in 2024
• Highest-grossing Broadway adaptation at the US box office

In case it wasn't clear already, the decision to split Wicked into two movies has paid off, and we can already expect big things from Wicked: For Good when it's released in November 2025 ahead of Thanksgiving again.
