Dead of Winter, the "engrossing" survival thriller starring Emma Thompson, is now available to watch at home. With a wintery setting and an inspiring tale of perseverance, this is a great watch as the temperature drops. The survival thriller is currently available to watch in Standard or High Definition on Prime Video, where it's priced at £7.99 or £9.99.

Directed by Brian Kirk from a screenplay by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb, Dead of Winter was released in UK cinemas in September. It sees Thompson portray Barb, a Minnesota local who is grieving the death of her husband, Carl.

To commemorate his memory, Barb heads to a lake where they spent their youth, but finds herself with a new purpose. After coming across two peculiar strangers (played by Judy Greer and Marc Menchaca), Barb notices that a young woman, Leah (Laurel Marsden), is being held captive in a basement, and vows to free her.

If you need any more convincing to watch this chilling tale, then look no further than the positive reception from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting a solid approval rating of 76% from 68 reviews.

"It’s suspenseful and smart. It’s got great performances across the board. It’s exactly the kind of thriller we keep saying we want, again and again, but which never get enough credit," wrote The Wrap.

AV Club was also full of praise, writing: "Much like its locale, Dead of Winter is a sparse but engrossing thriller, one that excels because of the nuanced work of its cast and Kirk’s focus on Barb’s grief amid the chaos."

The Guardian wrote: "Thompson’s relatable presence and likability-aura make a very good solvent for the concentrated nastiness of Greer’s desperate villain and what she has in mind for her teen prisoner. There’s a distinct chill."

Dead of Winter isn't the only film featuring Thompson to be made available this month, though.

Festive favourite Last Christmas, which the actor stars in and co-wrote the screenplay, is now streaming on Disney+ just in time for the season.
