Both Fandango and Movie Tickets experienced incredible demand in the US and were forced to undergo immediate site maintenance.

IMAX may have been to blame, as its website directed fans to Fandango and Movie Tickets as it awaits the new trailer set to air during halftime of Monday Night Football before selling tickets itself.

JJ Abrams's The Force Awakens begins a new trilogy of sequels, which will continue with movies directed by Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has its world premiere in Hollywood, ahead of its cinematic release in the UK on December 17 and the US on December 18.
