How to Train Your Dragon is set to hold off competition from 28 Years Later and Elio to continue soaring at the box office.

The live-action remake already has a sequel confirmed, so we don't blame you if you're wondering whether the movie has a post-credit scene to tease what's next for Hiccup and Toothless.

If you're seeing it this weekend, we can confirm that How to Train Your Dragon does have a post-credit scene.

There's only one and it comes right at the end of the credits, so you'll have to stay for the full credits to see it.

If you've already seen How to Train Your Dragon and missed the credit scene, or just want to know what it is to see if it's worth staying for, then we've got all the details for you below if you don't mind spoilers.

How to Train Your Dragon post-credit scene explained

Unless you're a very dedicated How to Train Your Dragon fan, it's fair to say that the post-credit scene isn't the most important watch.

What to Read Next

Rather than set up the sequel (which we assume would follow the same story as the animated sequel), we see Hiccup open his journal to his sketch of Toothless with the Book of Dragons in the background.

Hiccup appears to be about to sketch a picture of Toothless into the Book of Dragons, but we don't see this happening as the credit scene is extremely brief.

That's literally all that happens in the How to Train Your Dragon post-credit scene, so you're not really missing anything if you did miss it.

During the credits leading up to it, you do see some overhead shots of the stunning real-life locations where the remake was filmed though, before we see more pages from the Book of Dragons, so at least there's something to enjoy before then.

How to Train Your Dragon tribute explained

If you do stay to the end of the credits, you'll see that How to Train Your Dragon is "dedicated to the loving memory of Margaret Coll".

Gerard Butler's mother Margaret Coll passed away at the age of 81 in February 2025, and it was director Dean DeBlois who suggested the idea of dedicating the movie to her.

"I proposed it to the studio to see how they felt about it before telling him. I knew that the loss of his mother was a deeply felt wound and that he was having a tough time recovering from it," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"So to honour her with a dedication in the credits just seemed like the right thing to do in that moment."

How to Train Your Dragon is out now in cinemas.
