Scream 7 is set to bring back one of the horror franchise's most iconic killers.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the upcoming instalment will see the return of Matthew Lillard's Stu Macher, who was behind the Ghostface mask in the original 1996 film alongside his partner-in-crime Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich).

Stu certainly seemed pretty dead at the end of the film, having been stabbed by Billy before Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott dropped a TV onto his head.

However, Hayden Panettiere's character Kirby Reed was presumed dead before she made a shock return in Scream 6, so anything is possible.

More likely, though, is that Stu will appear as a hallucination, similar to how Billy returned in Scream as a vision in the mind of his daughter Sam (Melissa Barrera).

Lillard appeared to celebrate the news of his return with a cryptic video posted to his Instagram page, which featured an iconic quote from the original Scream: "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!"

Entertainment Weekly has also reported that Scott Foley, who played murderous filmmaker Roman Bridger in Scream 3, will also return for Scream 7.

Again, Roman seemed pretty dead at the end of the film after he was shot in the head, so it's possible he'll also appear as a hallucination.

Scream 7, which began filming earlier this month, will also mark Neve Campbell's return as Sidney Prescott after she skipped Scream 6.

The film will also bring back Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers and Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, while newcomers include Yellowstone prequel star Isabel May, Anna Camp, Celeste O'Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace and Sam Rechner.

Scream 7 will be released in cinemas on February 27, 2026.
