Chris Evans has responded to the recent report that he's returning for Avengers: Doomsday, either as Steve Rogers/Captain America or another character.

An article from Deadline in December "confirmed" that the actor had signed on for Marvel's next big team-up film, due out next year.

In a profile piece on Anthony Mackie for Captain America: Brave New World, Esquire spoke to Evans and asked him about the report. and he denied that was the case.

"That’s not true, though," he said. "This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no—happily retired!"

Mackie himself said he "didn't know!" about Evans' apparent return until he saw that report.

He explained that: "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn't on the table then. At least, he didn't tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, 'You know, they said they're bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?' He goes, 'Oh, you know, I'm happily retired.'"

If Evans is lying, he wouldn't be the first actor to deny they are returning to the MCU when they really are.

Elsewhere in the Esquire piece, Mackie laid out how long he thinks he'll stick with the franchise now that his character Sam Wilson has become the new Captain America and is leading his very own movie.

"I give it a solid 10 years," he said. "You have the two Avengers movies [Doomsday and Secret Wars], you have hopefully another Captain America, and then random plug-and-plays: 'Oh, Spider-Man! Oh, Fantastic Four! What are you doing here?'

"But you never know. I mean, I don't want to be a 60-year-old Captain America."

Captain America: Brave New World opens in cinemas on February 14, 2025. The first three Captain America movies and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are streaming on Disney+.
