Bridget Jones star Renée Zellweger has said the upcoming fourth film in the franchise might not be the last.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is set to be released on February 14 with Zellweger returning to the titular role alongside Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver.

It follows 2016 film Bridget Jones's Baby, but this fourth outing might not mark the end of the beloved rom-com series.

Speaking to Deadline, Zellweger said she "couldn't have imagined" the success the films would have when she was first cast as Bridget.

"I just knew that I loved her, I knew she made me laugh, I knew she touched my heart, and I found her so charming and endearing," the star continued.

She went on to say she would "never be done" with Bridget Jones and that she loves her, adding: "Hopefully [author Helen Fielding] might spark to something and want to share something through the Bridget character again down the line."

When asked if she would say no to reprising the role, Zellweger replied, "Who would say no?", and that "we can hope" this isn't the last chapter.

Based on Helen Fielding's book of the same name, the film rejoins Bridget four years after the death of Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) as the single mum juggles raising 9-year-old Billy and 4-year-old Mabel.

"Now juggling work, home and romance, Bridget grapples with the judgment of the perfect mums at school, worries about Billy as he struggles with the absence of his father, and engages in a series of awkward interactions with her son's rational-to-a-fault science teacher," a synopsis continues.

Sally Phillips, Shirley Henderson, and James Callis return to their roles as Shazzer, Jude, and Tom respectively, while Emma Thompson will once again play Dr Rawlings and Sarah Solemani will reprise her role as Bridget's work colleague Miranda.

Chiwetel Ejiofor joins the cast as Billy's science teacher, while Leo Woodall will also appear as another of Bridget's love interests.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy will be released in UK cinemas on February 14. It will be released on Peacock in the US on February 13.
