The Crown and Outlander star Tobias Menzies has landed his next movie role in The Entertainment System Is Down.

The latest project from Triangle of Sadness director Ruben Östlund will be a social satire that is set on a long-haul flight.

When the aircraft's entertainment systems fails, an eclectic group of international passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.

According to Deadline, Menzies will be part of the ensemble cast, which includes previously announced cast members Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton and Daniel Brühl.

Menzies is reportedly replacing Joel Edgerton, who had to exit the film due to scheduling conflicts.

Östlund previously told Variety that the film will be "a study of how human beings interact in this little laboratory that is a plane" and "will look at how modern human beings are wrecked under these circumstances".

He also said he hoped one real-time scene in the film would inspire the biggest walkout in the history of Cannes Film Festival.

Meanwhile, Menzies last appeared on screen in Apple TV+'s true-crime drama Manhunt last year.

Based on author James L Swanson's nonfiction book Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer, the seven-part series tells the story of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the subsequent hunt for his killer John Wilkes Booth.

Menzies stars as Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, the man tasked with catching Booth following Lincoln's death.

The actor has also addressed the possibility of a return as Frank or 'Black Jack' Randall in the upcoming eighth and final season of Outlander, saying: "What am I allowed to say? It would be great. [But] no, you will not see me. They're going to bring it home magnificently, I'm sure."
