Cineworld is closing another five cinemas this month, following six venues closing across the UK and Ireland last year.
In December 2024, it was confirmed that the company had completed its Restructuring Plan which has resulted in six more cinemas being closed. The first of those (Weymouth) closed in late December, with the other five closing this month.
It follows the previous closures in October 2024, which followed in the wake of the announcement of Picturehouse cinemas that shut down this summer.
Here's everything you need to know about the potential Cineworld closures, in addition to details of the local cinemas affected.
Is Cineworld closing down?
As mentioned above, five Cineworld cinemas closed down in October 2024. They were: Glasgow Parkhead, Bedford, Loughborough, Yate and Swindon Circus.
However, there was some good news as the Cineworld in Hinckley – which had been due to close in October too – was confirmed to stay open.

It was then announced that six further cinemas were to be closed as a result of Cineworld completing its Restructuring Plan: Castleford, Leigh, Middlesbrough, Northampton, Poole, Weymouth.
Weymouth closed on December 30, 2024, while the other five sites will close on January 19, 2025.
Cineworld is a global company running 94 cinemas in the UK (which will drop to 89 cinemas from January 19, 2025) and operating a further 23 Picturehouse cinemas.
Cineworld filed for bankruptcy protection in America in September 2022. Bloomsberg UK reported that the company was seeking help to pay off "nearly $9 billion of debt and leases accumulated as part of an acquisition spree".
Two UK sites closed down since the bankruptcy ruling overseas. In 2023, Cineworld Runcorn and Cineworld Bristol both ceased trading from November 26, 2023.
Cineworld Friar Walk, a chain in Newport, is another venue that has closed down in recent years, with the cinema never re-opening its doors after the UK's coronavirus lockdown.

Which Picturehouse cinemas are closing down?
In June 2024, Picturehouse confirmed the closure of three London-based branches: Fulham Road, Bromley and Stratford East.
"Each are beloved cinemas but increasing operational costs and declining admissions at these venues have left us with no other choice," Picturehouse said in a statement outlining their reasons behind the recent closures.
Hugh Grant was one Fulham local to publicly lament the closure of his nearest Picturehouse.
"Fulham Rd cinema closing after 94 years," he tweeted. "Strangely unbearable. Let’s all sit at home and watch « content » on « streaming ». While scrolling. Miserable face emoji."
Cineworld bought the cinema chain for £47.3 million back in December 2021.
