Enola Holmes 2 diverts the action from "self-exploration" towards pure detective work, according to Millie Bobby Brown.

Ahead of the sequel's Netflix release next week, the breakout Stranger Things actress weighed in on what's different this time around, with the eponymous sleuth expanding her skills.

"We've really upped the ante from the first film. The first film was about self-exploration, personal growth: a young girl loses her mother, goes to find her mother, has very misogynistic brothers, one of whom, Sherlock, is a work in progress," she said in quotes from the film's production notes.

"She's on this journey of self-exploration with a silly boy [Tewkesbury] that helps her along the way.

"I loved that approach to the first film. It really gave everyone a peer-eyed view into Enola. But this film isn't about Enola. It's about Detective Enola Holmes.

"I find it so inspiring to think of these young women who basically have no power at all rising up against the system. But also it's consistent with the theme of sisterhood that runs through this film. Jack [Thorne, writer] and Harry [Bradbeer, director] were so clever in how they bring Enola into the movement."

Of course, we wouldn't even have an Enola Holmes 2 without the runaway success of the first movie, which arrived two years ago.

Addressing its reception amongst audiences, the Godzilla vs Kong star told Total Film earlier this month: "I really didn't think it would be as successful as it was. Of course, it resonated with me so much – that's why I did it.

"I thought, 'There's so much potential here'. But I didn't realise how much potential. People like Blake Lively messaged me, saying, 'My daughter wants to be Enola Holmes'. It started to sink in how much it resonated with everyone else."

Enola Holmes 2 comes to Netflix on Friday, November 4.
