Patrick Stewart has teased his imminent return as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, suggesting his character has a "Superman quality".

The X-Men star recently confirmed his comeback as the iconic character in the Marvel-verse, which itself came after a tease in the recent trailer for the new movie.

Touching upon his appearance and how he could return in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Stewart admitted it is "a very delicate area".

"All I can say to you is we'll have to see," he said. "But bear in mind that Professor Xavier has already died twice. I think he must have some sort of Superman quality."

It comes after the star's apparent confirmation earlier this week, telling Jake's Takes: "Professor X would be extraordinarily cautious and watchful, and perhaps feel a little insecure.

The specific trailer scene saw Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) brought before The Illuminati, before Xavier's apparent voice is heard off screen.

"I had my phone turned off as it happened, so I didn't hear anything," Stewart said of the fan reaction. "It wasn't until the next morning when I woke up and looked at my phone and found that I had been bombarded with responses. My PR people had sent me reactions that they had detailed and passed onto me.

"I actually didn't recognise my own voice. It sounded different. Whether I had a cold or something at the time, I don't know.

"I was astonished – and all they saw was the back of my shoulder and I think my earlobe, nothing else – that there would have been so many connections made. But it pleased me [to see the reactions]."

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see the return of Cumberbatch after his turn in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while Elizabeth Olsen will appear as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is due to be released on May 5, 2022.
