Smallville star Tom Welling has landed himself his next movie role.

As reported by Deadline, the Clark Kent actor, who also appeared in Lucifer more recently, will lead an action-thriller called Deep Six, from Death in Texas writer and director Scott Windhauser.

Welling will play a prisoner named Terry who is released early in order to go on an undercover mission in Italy. Unfortunately, things go terribly wrong and all of his teammates are killed on the first day.

He then has to team up with a psychopathic killer in order to fulfil his mission, while keeping his cover a secret.

Twilight, Easy A and The OC star Cam Gigandet will star opposite him, while The Irishman's Al Linea, Death in Texas' Cher Cosenza and Best Fake Friends' Sidhartha Mallya have also been cast.

"I really lucked out to get to work with such a great actor like Tom. I think he is really going to open a lot of eyes with his role," Windhauser said in a statement. "He gets to go toe-to-toe with Cam in a game of cat and mouse that the audience will love. I can't wait to show the world this project."

The film begins shooting in April in Rome, which sounds very lovely indeed.

Last year, Welling revealed that he and his Smallville co-star Michael Rosenbaum, who played evil Lex Luthor, are working on an animated series continuation of the show, featuring as many of the cast and characters as they can gather together.

The superhero show already has an official continuation in comic-book form, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the powers-that-be could commission something, especially with Warner Bros' HBO Max hosting a lot of DC Comics properties already.
